“Teach for America is pleased to be a partner of The Louisiana Marathon. This event continues to grow and after our corps members hosted a water station in 2013, we are pleasured that now runners can fundraise for Teach For America as part of the Marathon. Our corps members will also be Kids Ambassadors in area schools as we work in concert with Louisiana Runs & The Louisiana Marathon to increase health and fitness in our youth. With runners from 47 states and 11 countries we are excited for the Marathon this year and know that this great event gives us the opportunity to raise the profile of Baton Rouge, get the word out about Teach For America’s work in Louisiana and promote health and wellness to our community.” – Michael Tipton, Executive Director of Teach For America – South Louisiana
MORE ON TEACH FOR AMERICA
Teach For America is the national corps of outstanding recent college graduates who commit to teach for two years in urban and rural public schools and become lifelong leaders in expanding educational opportunity. Our mission is to build the movement to eliminate educational inequity by enlisting our nation’s most promising future leaders in the effort. We recruit outstanding recent college graduates who commit two years to teach in urban and rural areas and become lifelong leaders in pursuing educational excellence and equity. With extensive training and support, these corps members work relentlessly to ensure that students growing up today in low-income communities are given the educational opportunities they deserve.
As alumni, they are a powerful force of leaders who act on the conviction and insight they gain from their teaching experience, working in education and all other sectors to effect the fundamental changes needed to ensure that all children have an equal chance in life. This fall, 9,000 corps members are teaching in 43 regions across the country, while nearly 24,000 Teach For America alumni continue working from inside and outside the field of education for the fundamental changes necessary to ensure educational excellence and equity. In our community, 160 corps members are currently serving in Ascension, Avoyelles, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, St. Helena and Pointe Coupee parishes, and the various charter schools across the capital region.
