2018 Art Print

CONTEST WINNER

CONGRATS DENISE HOPKINS

THE ART PRINT

Each year we’ve partnered with an artist to produce a one-of-a-kind art print to commemorate the event. This year we  partnered with Baton Rouge Gallery – Center for Contemporary Art to open up the artist selection process to all artists based in Louisiana. The winner was selected from a juried panel.

THE WINNER

Denise Hopkins grew up in Mandeville, Louisiana, but didn’t take her first art class until she attended Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama, where she eventually majored in English and studio art.  After college, she earned a master’s degree in English at LSU and taught art and creative writing to high school students in New Orleans for six years. In April 2014, she did a painting a day for thirty days as a way to launch a full-time art career– every day at 1:00 pm, rain or shine, she would paint while her toddler son napped. This discipline started as a way to cope with grief and begin to heal from loss– first miscarriages and then divorce. When Denise lived in New Orleans, she’d spend hours on her mid-city porch overlooking Bayou St. John watching pelicans dive for food. Their presence calmed her when life had become most chaotic. She started painting pelicans regularly which eventually turned into an interest in all birds– their grace, quickness, and sometimes contradictory stillness and quiet near Louisiana waters.

Denise and her now five-year old son currently live in Covington where she continues her three year + practice of painting daily. Her work has been featured on theknot.com, nola.com, Sophisticated Woman Magazine, The Times Picayune, and several other publications. In 2016, Denise was voted “Northshore’s Best Local Artist”.

Denise has recently added abstract, non-representational works to her collection of bird and nature paintings, but her intention remains: serenity and chaos coexisting, peace overshadowing turmoil. She often uses a palette knife instead of brush to create thick textures and vibrant colors. When she’s not in her studio, Denise can be found painting live at a wedding receptions and corporate events in New Orleans, Baton Rouge and across the country. Her work can be seen via her website (www.denisehopkinsfineart.com) or social media (@denisehopkinsfineart).
