ALEX HARVIE has painted his way up through the crowds with his relentless work ethic, consistent quality and business sense. His professional career as an artist began in Baton Rouge in 2005.

After working in catering through college, Harvie pursued his art full-time. With limited art events in Baton Rouge, he created shows at venues like, Lux Salon and Mestizo Restaurant. He partnered with artist TJ Black who co-produced Stabbed in the Art – a show featuring local artists, which quickly became a monthly event and has been running for since 2007.

This approach to creating art shows lead to an increase in local shows, live painting battles and the launch of Gallery Bohemia in 2008 – a collective attempt to discover and share unknown artists in the mainstream market.

Harvie has been instrumental coordinating group shows and live painting battles throughout the state. So much so, that recently he moved down river to New Orleans to expand on his successes with his wife Amy.

There he would paint D.J. gigs, select shows, fundraiser charity events and the occasional wedding. “I’ll paint anywhere I can get my brushes into,” says Harvie.

“Its funny, but whenever I painted in New Orleans, at least once a night, someone would ask me if I was Frenchy.” Eventually, Harvie, TJ Black and Frenchy did a triple-collective at Maple Leaf for Flow Tribe. The working relationships has blossomed since then and after they both secured studio space near each other and have made short videos and played music together.

Harvie loves to work with other artists; he adds, “Collaboration is a great way to take things to the next level.”

He has been featured on “Four Weddings” on TLC and regularly travels nationwide to perform live painting sessions. After performing 3-4 events on weekends, he schedules studio time to create pieces shown at 20+ venues statewide.

TJ_BLACK-600

TJ BLACK makes music, movies and paintings. Each day he faces the dilemma choosing between making music and working on paintings. His passion for lyrics helps shape his paintings in a very unique way. He often adds comical or non-sensical word-phrases to is work in order to enhance the viewer experience.

Pieces are full of painted words, pages from books and pop imagery on acrylics and mixed medial collages. The backgrounds are raw with messier marks, while the foregrounds tend to be crisp, with careful brush work, detailing subject matter.

He does not limit his creations to canvas, but rather chooses to paint on various services, like pieces of salvaged wood, pieced together into larger, visually stunning arrangements.

TJ has been working as an artists for over 15 years in Louisiana, primarily New Orleans and Baton Rouge. He began painting competitively, as a part of  “Art Battle”  event circuit he and fellow painter Alex Harvie has contributed to often each year. Not only does he enjoy collaborative paintings, but recently he as featured on Louisiana Public Broadcasting.

It would be impossible to define exactly how many paintings he has created, but we can more accurately say, over a thousand. He is self-taught and has a passion for experimentation, observation and diligence – all of which has defined his unique style.
